“Surprising, they prefer our sugar, even though it’s much more expensive!”

(Nursalim, 35, coconut sugar processor)

Through its CSES project, Sahabat Cipta facilitates coconut sugar smallholder processors in Penajam Paser Utara (PPU), East Kalimantan, in making sugar by using natural preservatives, in lieu of chemical preservatives they usually used, and applying good practices in processing from taping the, preserving, cooking coconut sap and packaging the sugar products. The result, better taste and healthier coconut sugar.

Nursalim, 35 years old, the youngest coconut sugar processor of the project beneficiaries was happily surprise to learn the market response to the coconut sugar he produced. Through traders in the local market in Petung, he found out that consumers prefer to buy sugar that he and his friends produced, even though the price is twice as high as those supplied by other processors from outside the project targeted area.

I was happily surprised when the trader keep asking me to supply more and more sugar, as more consumers are asking for it, even though the price is twice as expensive”, he said.

Being a resource person started to be a second nature to Ja’i, as he often been asked to take that role in events conducted by different stakeholders in the district, including the government and non-government organizations.

After witnessing Ja’i’s presentation, donor’s representative, Mr. Beta Wicaksono, Program Coordinator of Mobile Cepu Limited (MCL), maintained that Ja’i is one of proves of the program’s sustainability. “This is prove of the program’s sustainability, when the beneficiary has taken over the role of the facilitator, it is one prove that the program will be sustainable”, he said in his closing remarks to the workshop.
